How to use this calculator
Enter total credits, study hours per credit, class hours per week, and semester length. The calculator estimates the time commitment needed for the whole term.
Estimate weekly and semester study workload from academic credits. Convert course credits into outside study hours, total semester effort, and study-life balance risk.

The result combines class time and outside study time. A high weekly workload means you may need a stricter schedule or lighter course load.
Some courses require more or less study time than the standard 2 to 3 hours per credit. Adjust the study-hour setting for difficult classes.
For 15 credits, 3 study hours per credit, 15 class hours, and 16 weeks, the weekly workload is 60 hours and the semester workload is 960 hours.
A common rule is 2 to 3 hours of study per credit each week, depending on course difficulty.
At 3 study hours per credit, 15 credits require about 45 study hours outside class each week.
It may be difficult because 18 credits can require 54 or more study hours plus class time each week.
Credit hour workload usually combines scheduled class time with expected independent study time.
If class plus study time approaches full-time work levels or beyond, workload risk is elevated.
