Working with Database & SQL Tools

Database work has a lot of small tasks that are easier to reason about when separated from a live connection: formatting SQL, inspecting DDL, building clauses, comparing schemas, or translating simple structures. These tools are designed for that preparation and review stage, where you want to understand or shape a query before it touches a database.

SQL syntax and behavior vary by engine, so always keep the target database in view. Quoting rules, date functions, JSON operators, upsert syntax, limits, and data types differ between PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, SQL Server, and others. A query that looks correct in isolation can still be expensive or unsafe on real data, so review execution plans and use transactions for consequential changes.

Practical tips

  • Format complex SQL before reviewing joins, predicates, and grouping; structure is easier to spot when it is readable.
  • Confirm the SQL dialect before relying on generated syntax.
  • Never run generated UPDATE or DELETE statements on production without reviewing the WHERE clause first.
  • Use parameterized queries in application code rather than building SQL by concatenating user input.
  • For schema changes, test against a representative copy and plan rollback or migration steps before deployment.
