How to use this calculator

  • Enter total orders and returned orders for the same period.
  • Add average order value to estimate revenue exposure.
  • Enter shipping, restocking, support, or handling cost as cost per return.
  • Calculate to see return rate, cost impact, status, and a recommendation.

What the result means

A lower return rate means more orders are staying profitable. A high return rate may indicate product description issues, sizing problems, quality gaps, or a return policy that is too costly.

Return Rate = Returned Orders ÷ Total Orders × 100. Lost Revenue = Returned Orders × AOV. Return Cost = Returned Orders × Cost per Return.

General ecommerce return rates below 5% are usually healthy, while double-digit rates require product-level investigation.

Example calculation

If 18 of 500 orders are returned and AOV is $75, the return rate is 3.6% and lost revenue exposure is $1,350 before recovery value.

Tips for better results

  • Track return reasons by SKU.
  • Improve sizing charts, photos, and product descriptions.
  • Separate preventable returns from customer preference returns.
  • Watch return costs during promotion periods.

FAQ

What is a good Shopify return rate?

For many non-apparel Shopify stores, a return rate below 5% is generally healthy. Apparel and size-sensitive categories may run higher and should be benchmarked separately.

How can I reduce Shopify product returns?

Improve product photos, sizing guides, descriptions, quality control, packaging, and post-purchase communication so customers receive what they expected.

How much do returns reduce Shopify profit?

Returns reduce profit through refunded revenue, reverse shipping, restocking, support time, payment fees, and inventory that may not be resellable.

Should I offer free returns on Shopify?

Free returns can improve trust, but they should be tested against margin, repeat purchase value, and the added cost per returned order.

Which Shopify products have the highest return risk?

Products with sizing, fit, fragile shipping, unclear specs, or high expectation gaps usually carry the highest return risk.
