Working with backgrounds and transparency
Transparent images are simple until the edges matter. Removing a background, extracting an alpha channel, adding clear padding, or preparing a product photo can all leave halos, jagged edges, or semi-transparent pixels that only become obvious when the image is placed on a different color.
Before exporting, preview the result on both light and dark backgrounds and zoom in around hair, fabric, logos, and soft shadows. If the final image is going to a marketplace, presentation, or design file, check that the chosen format actually preserves transparency instead of flattening it unexpectedly.
Practical tips
- Use PNG or another alpha-aware format when the transparent area must be preserved.
- Inspect edge pixels at high zoom after background removal or chroma key work.
- Keep a copy of the original image before flattening or replacing a background.
- For product images, test the cutout on pure white as well as a contrasting color.
- Watch for soft shadows and reflections; removing them completely can make a subject look pasted on.
