Checking image metadata before sharing

Photos and exported graphics can carry information that is not visible in the pixels. Depending on the file and the device that created it, metadata may include timestamps, camera details, editing software, orientation data, and sometimes location information.

Removing metadata can reduce accidental disclosure, but it is not the same as anonymizing the image itself. Faces, badges, street signs, reflections, document text, and other visible details may reveal more than the metadata does, so sensitive images still need a visual privacy check.

Practical tips

• Inspect metadata before publishing personal or workplace photos publicly.
• Remove GPS information when location does not need to travel with the file.
• Remember that screenshots and re-exports may create a different metadata set.
• Do not rely on metadata stripping to hide information that remains visible in the picture.
• Keep an original copy if capture date or camera details may be useful later.
