Cleaning up photos without over-processing them

Enhancement tools are most useful when they solve a specific problem: weak contrast, softness, noise, color cast, JPEG artifacts, or distracting defects. Applying every available correction at once can make a photo look brittle or artificial and may erase fine texture that cannot be recovered.

Work in small steps and compare frequently with the original. Noise reduction followed by sharpening, for example, can improve a difficult image, but pushing either setting too far may create waxy surfaces, halos, or exaggerated edges.

Practical tips

• Identify the main defect before choosing an enhancement rather than applying everything.
• View faces, hair, fabric, and fine patterns at 100% while adjusting cleanup settings.
• Use sharpening after resizing when preparing a smaller final image.
• Be conservative with denoising on already compressed JPEG files.
• Save an intermediate version before making aggressive corrections.
