How to use this office tool

Choose an Excel, CSV, or TSV file, select a sheet, and enter the first data row. The tool replaces non-empty data cells with masked text while retaining the header row.

What this tool does

The selected sheet is copied into a new workbook. Non-empty cells from the chosen starting row are changed to a same-length mask; formulas are replaced only when “Preserve formulas” is turned off.

Use a copy for sharing or review. Masking reduces casual exposure but is not cryptographic anonymization.

Supported formats

XLSX, XLS, CSV, and TSV are accepted where the operation supports them. Browser memory, parser support, and Excel worksheet limits apply.

FormatSupport
XLSX / XLSParsed locally; advanced workbook objects may not be preserved
CSV / TSVQuoted fields supported; encoding is read by the browser

Tips for better results

  • Keep column headings outside the masking range.
  • Review identifiers that may remain recognizable from length or pattern.
  • Download and inspect the result before sharing it.

FAQ

Can I mask only data rows and keep spreadsheet headers?

Yes. Set the first data row so earlier rows remain unchanged.

Does masking permanently alter my original workbook?

No. The browser creates a separate XLSX download and does not overwrite the selected file.

Is masked spreadsheet data anonymous?

Not necessarily. Length, structure, and surrounding columns may still reveal information, so assess re-identification risk.

Are formulas masked too?

Formulas are retained when Preserve formulas is enabled; turn it off if formula cells must also be replaced.

Does the file leave my browser?

No. Processing occurs locally in the page and the tool does not upload workbook contents.
