Choose the output for where the audio will be used

Audio conversion is less about finding a universally “best” format and more about matching the file to its destination. MP3 and AAC are practical for sharing and playback, WAV is useful when you want an uncompressed working file, and browser or video workflows may call for formats such as WebM or a particular codec. Sample rate, bitrate, channel count, and codec support all affect whether the exported file will play correctly and how large it will be.

Converting an already compressed file to another lossy format does not restore detail; repeated lossy exports can gradually make artifacts more obvious. When you have the original, convert from that rather than from a chain of previous exports. For files going into an editor, streaming platform, slide deck, or website, check the receiving software's supported formats first. A smaller file is not useful if the target app cannot decode it reliably.
