Volume tools answer different questions. Peak level shows how close the signal gets to digital full scale, loudness measurements are closer to perceived program level, crest factor describes the relationship between peaks and average energy, and a noise gate controls low-level material rather than making the whole track quieter. Looking at these together gives a more useful picture than normalizing every file to the same peak.
Leave headroom while editing and judge loudness after the major processing is in place. Heavy limiting can make a file seem louder but may reduce punch and make speech or music tiring over time. Noise gates also need care: a threshold that removes room noise between phrases can clip breaths and word endings when set too aggressively. Compare before and after at similar perceived volume whenever possible, otherwise the louder version may seem better simply because it is louder.
Practical tips
- Check both peak level and overall loudness before deciding whether a file really needs gain adjustment.
- Leave some headroom during processing so later EQ, mixing, or encoding does not create new clipping.
- Set noise-gate thresholds while listening to the quietest useful speech or instrument detail you want to keep.
- Use crest factor as context for dynamics, not as a target that every recording should match.
- When comparing processed versions, level-match them as closely as possible before choosing the better result.
