Voice recording quality depends heavily on microphone placement, room noise, input gain, and consistency. A live waveform or level display can help catch obvious overloads, while noise-floor checks reveal whether fans, air conditioning, computer noise, or an overly hot preamp are eating into the usable range. Voice-activated and silence-activated recording can save time, but thresholds need to be tested with both quiet and loud speech so the beginning of words is not missed.
Set levels with the loudest realistic speaking voice, not with a quiet test sentence. That leaves headroom for laughter, emphasis, or moving closer to the microphone. If the room is reflective, moving the microphone nearer to the speaker often improves clarity more than aggressive processing afterward. Before a long session, make a short test recording and play it back through headphones; monitoring only the on-screen meter will not reveal every problem.
Practical tips
- Record ten to twenty seconds of room tone before the session; it is useful for identifying and editing background noise later.
- Keep microphone distance and angle consistent when recording multiple takes that need to match.
- Set activation thresholds low enough to catch soft speech but high enough to ignore steady room noise.
- Watch for plosives and desk vibration during the test recording, not just peak level.
- Use clear session markers or filenames during long takes so good sections are easy to find afterward.
