What the result means

Weighted grades prioritize high-weight categories. A lower score in a large category can matter more than a perfect score in a small category.

Weighted grade = sum of each grade × its weight ÷ total weight.

This simplified tool uses two categories. Combine similar categories or use it iteratively for more grading groups.

Example calculation

With 92% at 40% weight and 84% at 60% weight, the weighted grade is 87.2%.

Tips for better results

  • Confirm weights add to 100%.
  • Improve the highest-weight weak category first.
  • Run a what-if score before major exams.
  • Do not rely on simple averages for weighted classes.

FAQ

How do weighted grades work?

Each category score is multiplied by its weight, then divided by total weight to produce the weighted average.

How much does my final exam affect my grade?

The effect depends on the final exam weight. Higher weight means each exam point changes your course grade more.

Can one assignment lower my weighted grade?

Yes, especially if the assignment belongs to a heavily weighted category or if the category has few total items.

What weighted grade do I need for an A?

Compare your weighted grade with your class A cutoff, often 90%, then calculate the remaining score needed.

Why does not my average match my weighted grade?

A simple average ignores category weights, while weighted grading gives more influence to larger categories.
