Renters Insurance Deductible Tradeoff Calculator

Compare two renters insurance deductible options using the actual premiums you were quoted. The calculator finds how long premium savings from the higher deductible take to equal its additional out-of-pocket exposure. It also shows savings over your chosen period, helping you weigh predictable premium costs against the amount you would retain after a covered loss. It is a decision aid, not a claim forecast or policy recommendation.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the lower and higher deductibles from comparable quotes.
  2. Add each option’s annual premium.
  3. Choose how many years you expect to keep the coverage.
  4. Compare break-even time, accumulated savings, and added claim exposure.

Formula

Annual savings = lower-deductible premium − higher-deductible premium
Break-even years = deductible increase ÷ annual savings

The period comparison assumes one covered claim large enough for both deductibles to apply.

What the result means

A shorter break-even period means premium savings offset the additional amount retained before coverage pays sooner.

This estimate does not predict claims and does not compare exclusions, limits, discounts, or insurer service.

Example calculation

With $250 and $1,000 deductibles, annual premiums of $240 and $180, the annual saving is $60. The extra deductible is $750, so break-even is 12.50 years.

Tips for better results

  • Compare quotes with the same limits and endorsements.
  • Keep the selected deductible available in emergency savings.
  • Recalculate at renewal because premiums change.
  • Check whether different coverages have separate deductibles.
  • Consider multiple-claim scenarios before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

What if the higher-deductible quote costs more?

The calculator reports no break-even because there are no premium savings to recover the added deductible.

Does break-even mean I should choose the higher deductible?

No. You must also be able to pay the higher deductible promptly and compare all policy terms.

Does this model assume exactly one claim?

The period interpretation compares savings with the added cost of one covered claim; multiple claims can change the result.

Can I enter a zero deductible?

Yes, if the quoted policy truly has no deductible and the other deductible is higher.

Are small losses included in the comparison?

Only indirectly. A loss below a deductible may produce no insurer payment, so consider whether you would file that claim.
