How to use this calculator
- Select one shift or reporting period.
- Enter active resources and scheduled hours per resource.
- Enter used resource-hours measured on the same basis.
- Review utilization and remaining time buffer.
Measure how much scheduled dock-door time was actually used during a defined period. This calculator converts resource count and scheduled hours into available resource-hours, compares that capacity with productive or occupied hours, and reports utilization plus unused time. It supports shift planning and scenario comparisons while keeping the metric transparent: utilization describes time use, not service quality, throughput, or profitability.
Available resource-hours = resources × scheduled hours per resource
Utilization = used resource-hours ÷ available resource-hours × 100
The percentage shows the share of scheduled resource time consumed. Unused hours are the remaining time buffer in the same period.
Use identical time definitions in the numerator and denominator. A high percentage alone does not establish efficiency or an appropriate target.
12 resources × 14 scheduled hours = 168.0 available hours. With 180 used hours, utilization is 107.1% and unused time is -12.0 hours.
Use scheduled resource time in the denominator and actual productive or occupied time in the numerator for the same period.
An input producing more than 100% is rejected because used hours cannot exceed scheduled available hours under this definition.
Remove breaks only if your scheduled-time definition consistently excludes them for both planning and reporting.
No. Utilization measures time use, not quality, throughput, congestion, or cost; review those measures separately.
Yes, if resource counts and scheduled hours are converted into total resource-hours for the same reporting period.
