Formula

Average cycle time = Elapsed production time ÷ Units completed

Target gap = average cycle time − target cycle time.

What the result means

Average cycle time describes the observed production pace across the selected window. It may include minor stops and variation between individual units.

Measure elapsed time and completed units over the same boundary. For bottleneck analysis, also inspect station-level cycle times.

Example calculation

With 420 elapsed minutes and 140 completed units, average cycle time is 420 ÷ 140 = 3.00 minutes per unit. Output rate is 20 units per hour.
