Excavation Project Duration Calculator

Estimate the working days required to complete a defined excavation quantity. The calculator combines crew size, hours per day, labor productivity, and expected efficiency to find daily capacity, exact duration, a rounded scheduling allowance, and total crew-hours. It is useful for checking a baseline schedule before adding weekends, weather days, mobilization, or other project-specific constraints.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the measured project values using the units shown.
  2. Use field records or approved estimating assumptions for rates and percentages.
  3. Select Calculate and review the main result with the supporting figures.
  4. Test a second scenario before committing labor, equipment, or hauling resources.

Formula

Daily capacity = workers × hours/day × yd³/worker-hour × efficiency

Working days = total quantity ÷ daily capacity.

What the result means

Exact working days support comparisons and cost estimates; the rounded result is the minimum number of full crew days to reserve when partial-day scheduling is impractical.

This is a production-time estimate, not a promised completion date. Add mobilization, inspections, curing, shutdowns, weather, and calendar constraints separately.

Example calculation

For 5,000 yd³, a 5-person crew working 10 hours at 9 yd³ per worker-hour and 80% efficiency produces 360 yd³ per day. The job takes 13.89 working days, so plan 14 full days.

Tips for better results

  • Measure quantities from the latest drawing, survey, or field record.
  • Keep bank, loose, and compacted volumes clearly labeled.
  • Record the assumptions used so the estimate can be audited later.
  • Run a conservative scenario for access, weather, and variable ground conditions.
  • Compare the estimate with actual production and update future planning rates.

Frequently asked questions

How is excavation project duration estimated?

The calculator divides total excavation quantity by the crew’s efficiency-adjusted daily capacity.

What productivity rate should I enter for excavation?

Use a documented rate in yd³ per worker-hour from a comparable job, estimate, or recent field record.

Does the result include weekends or shutdowns?

No. The result is in working days. Convert it to calendar time using your actual work calendar.

Why is the duration rounded up to a whole day?

A crew generally needs another scheduled workday when the calculated duration contains any remaining fraction.

How does crew efficiency affect the finish date?

Lower efficiency reduces daily capacity and increases working days; the calculator displays both the exact and rounded durations.
