Task Marketplace Required Rate Calculator

Estimate the minimum rate needed to meet an income goal for a task marketplace worker using the parts of the work that actually affect the outcome. Adjust the assumptions to match your schedule, fees, expenses, or reserve rate. The result separates the headline figure from its supporting numbers so you can compare offers, plan cash flow, and avoid treating gross revenue as spendable income.

Formula

Required billings = (income goal + annual costs) ÷ [1 − fee rate − reserve rate]. Required hourly rate = required billings ÷ annual billable hours.

What the result means

This is an average floor across billable hours. Individual assignments may need higher pricing to reflect risk, scope, or specialized value.

The result is a planning estimate, not a market-rate recommendation or an earnings guarantee.

Example calculation

For a $70,000 income goal, $12,000 of costs, 1,200 billable hours, a 10% fee, and a 15% reserve, required billings are $109,333.33 and the required rate is $91.11 per hour.

Tips for better results

  • Use an average from several normal weeks instead of a single unusually busy day.
  • Keep platform fees separate from operating expenses so changes are easy to trace.
  • Revisit assumptions whenever your route, service mix, or workload changes.
  • Save a conservative scenario for months with cancellations or lower demand.
  • Compare the calculated figure with actual deposits and logged time.

Frequently asked questions

Why are fees and reserves both included in the denominator?

Both are modeled as percentages of billed revenue, so the remaining share must cover income and costs.

Can I enter a fixed-price workload?

Yes. Convert the planned projects into realistic annual billable hours to obtain an hourly-equivalent floor.

Does the required rate include personal income tax?

Only if you represent it in the reserve percentage; the calculator does not model tax brackets.

Why must fee plus reserve rates stay below 100%?

At 100% or more, no billed revenue remains to fund income or business costs.

Should non-billable hours be included?

No. Use only hours you reasonably expect to invoice or sell; non-billable work affects how many billable hours are feasible.
