Pet Boarding Break-Even Price Calculator

Find the average nightly boarding price needed to cover a facility’s monthly costs. Combine fixed overhead, variable care cost per occupied pet-night, expected occupancy, and operating capacity. The result shows both the no-profit break-even rate and a target rate based on your selected operating margin, before taxes and owner compensation not entered as costs.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter each requested value using the unit shown.
  2. Review schedule, cost, or capacity assumptions for the period.
  3. Select Calculate to update the result and supporting figures.
  4. Adjust one input at a time to compare practical scenarios.

Formula

Occupied pet-nights = capacity × open days × occupancy. Break-even price = fixed costs ÷ pet-nights + variable cost. Target price = break-even price ÷ (1 − target margin).

What the result means

The main result is an estimate based entirely on the values entered. Supporting figures show the volume, cost, time, or constraint that drives it.

Planning estimate only. Confirm medical, welfare, licensing, pricing, and staffing requirements with the appropriate professional or authority.

Example calculation

At 40 spaces, 30 open days, 70% occupancy, $18,000 fixed cost, and $12 variable cost, expected volume is 840 pet-nights. Break-even price is $33.43; a 20% margin requires about $41.79 per night.

Tips for better results

  • Replace defaults with current, documented values.
  • Recalculate when attendance, pricing, or instructions change.
  • Keep a small operational buffer only where it is genuinely needed.
  • Compare the result with actual records after the period ends.
  • Document assumptions when sharing the estimate with someone else.

Frequently asked questions

What inputs should I use for this pet boarding break-even price?

Use values from current records, written care instructions, contracts, and realistic scheduling assumptions. Do not substitute a benchmark for a known value.

Can I enter decimal values?

Yes. Fields that commonly require precision accept decimals, while counts such as days or animals are validated when a whole number is required.

Does the result include taxes?

No. The estimate includes only the values shown in the input panel. Add taxes, local charges, or omitted costs separately when they apply.

Why might the real result differ?

Actual attendance, timing, individual pet needs, staffing rules, prices, and unexpected changes can differ from the assumptions entered here.

Should I treat this estimate as professional advice?

No. Use it as a planning aid and confirm medical directions with a veterinarian and operating requirements with the relevant facility or local authority.
