Formula

Space capacity = usable space ÷ space per animal. Labor capacity = available minutes ÷ care minutes. Cycle capacity = facility cycle limit ÷ cycles per animal. Overall capacity is the smallest whole-number capacity.

What the result means

The main result is a planning ceiling under the entered assumptions, not a welfare endorsement. Real capacity may be lower after quarantine, separation, maternity, recovery, and emergency space are reserved.

Apply species-specific welfare rules, veterinary guidance, licensing conditions, and ethical breeding limits before using this estimate operationally.

Example calculation

With 120 m² at 6 m² per animal, 900 labor minutes at 35 minutes per animal, and 30 cycles at 1.5 cycles per animal, all three constraints allow 20 animals.

Why is capacity rounded down?

A fraction of an animal cannot be housed or cared for, so each constraint is converted to a whole-number ceiling.

Should maternity and quarantine space be included?

Only if it is truly available for the same purpose; dedicated or unavailable areas should be excluded from usable enclosure space.

What belongs in daily care time?

Include feeding, cleaning, observation, exercise, medication, handling, and routine recordkeeping attributable to each animal.

What if planned breeding cycles are zero?

The breeding-cycle constraint is treated as not applicable, while space and labor still limit the number of animals supported.

Does a higher calculated capacity mean expansion is appropriate?
