Formula

Remaining = target − (packetization + codec + jitter buffer + network + endpoint processing + margin).

What the result means

Positive remaining time means the entered components fit within the target. Negative time shows how far the design exceeds it.

This is a deterministic budget. Real calls also experience variation, packet loss, concealment, route changes, and asymmetric delay.

Example calculation

A 150 ms target minus 20 ms packetization, 10 ms codec, 30 ms jitter buffer, 45 ms network, 15 ms processing, and 10 ms margin leaves 20 ms remaining.

  • Measure network delay during the busy hour.
  • Avoid oversizing a static jitter buffer.
  • Include transcoding delay at gateways or SBCs.
  • Model each direction when routes are asymmetric.

Is 150 ms a required target?

It is a commonly used planning value, not a universal requirement. Enter the target defined by your service, application, or design standard.

Does the jitter buffer count as latency?

Yes. Buffering delays playout so late packets can arrive, trading additional latency for smoother audio.

Should packetization delay equal the packet interval?

Often it is close, but codec framing and implementation details can change the actual contribution. Use vendor or measured values.

Why is round-trip delay only approximate?

The two directions may use different routes, buffers, codecs, and queue conditions.

Can more bandwidth fix an exceeded latency budget?

More capacity can reduce congestion-related queueing, but it does not remove propagation, codec, packetization, or fixed processing delays.
