Required Mbps = devices × payload bytes × messages/min × 8 ÷ 60 ÷ 1,000,000 × (1 + overhead %) × (1 + headroom %)

The main result is a deterministic estimate based on the entered assumptions. Supporting values make the margin, demand, or conversion visible so you can compare scenarios without treating the output as a guarantee.

Average bandwidth can understate synchronized reporting peaks. If devices report on the minute, also test the busiest-second message count.

Example calculation

For 5,000 devices sending 512-byte payloads twice per minute, 20% overhead produces 0.819 Mbps average traffic; 30% headroom raises the requirement to about 1.065 Mbps.
