Inspection Drone Coverage Area Calculator

Estimate the ground area an inspection drone can survey per flight and per operating day. Speed, sensor swath, usable flight time, overlap, field efficiency, and daily flight count are combined into a practical coverage estimate.

Calculator

Planning inputs
km/h
Average speed while collecting usable data.
m
Usable ground width per pass.
min
Time collecting data, excluding transit.
%
Lateral overlap between adjacent passes.
%
Allowance for turns and irregular boundaries.
flights
Completed data-collection flights.

How to use this calculator

  1. Use the average speed maintained during data capture.
  2. Enter the sensor's usable ground swath at the planned altitude.
  3. Exclude transit and reserve time from survey minutes.
  4. Set required overlap, field efficiency, and flights per day.

Formula

Coverage (m²) = Speed (m/min) × Survey minutes × Swath × (1 − Overlap) × Field efficiency

What the result means

The result is an effective mapped area, not the area inside the drone's maximum range circle. It reflects the strip width and overlap of a survey pattern.

Terrain, altitude restrictions, image resolution, line-of-sight limits, transit distance, and re-flights can reduce actual coverage.

Example calculation

At 24 km/h, a 40 m swath, 28 survey minutes, 30% overlap, and 75% efficiency, one flight covers 23.52 hectares. Six flights cover 141.12 hectares per day.

Tips for better results

  • Derive swath from altitude and camera footprint.
  • Use higher overlap only when reconstruction quality needs it.
  • Lower field efficiency for narrow or fragmented sites.
  • Keep takeoff-to-site transit outside survey time.
  • Run a second scenario for strong-wind conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is sensor swath the same as flight altitude?

No. Swath is the usable ground width captured on each pass and depends on the sensor and altitude.

Why does overlap reduce net coverage?

Overlapped portions are photographed more than once, so they do not add new ground area.

Should transit time be included in survey minutes?

No. Enter only the portion of flight time spent collecting useful inspection data.

How are hectares converted to acres?

The calculator multiplies hectares by approximately 2.47105.

Does this calculate legal operating range?

No. Operational range and airspace compliance must be evaluated separately.
