Formula

Dilution factor = stock concentration ÷ target concentration
Stock volume = target concentration × final volume ÷ stock concentration

Diluent volume equals final volume minus stock volume.

What the result means

The main result expresses how many times more concentrated the stock is than the target. The calculated stock aliquot and diluent add to the requested final volume.

This calculator assumes ideal, additive volumes and a homogeneous stock. Mix the stock before sampling and verify concentration when the protocol requires it.

Example calculation

Diluting 1,000,000 cells/mL to 100,000 cells/mL for a final volume of 50 mL requires a 10× dilution: combine 5 mL of stock with 45 mL of diluent.

  • Mix the stock thoroughly before removing an aliquot.
  • Use serial dilutions when the required aliquot is too small to measure accurately.
