Estate Tax After Tax Value Calculator

Estimate the value remaining after debts, administration costs, and a user-supplied estate tax exemption and rate. Because estate taxes vary by jurisdiction and year, every legal threshold is editable. The result separates the taxable estate, estimated tax, and effective tax rate so assumptions remain visible.

Formula

Net estate = gross estate − deductions. Taxable estate = max(0, net estate − exemption). Estimated tax = taxable estate × entered rate.

What the result means

After-tax estate value is the modeled net estate after the estimated transfer tax. Supporting results expose the taxable base and tax amount.

This simplified estimate does not model graduated rates, elections, credits, portability, marital or charitable deductions, or beneficiary-level inheritance tax.

Example calculation

A $5,000,000 estate with $500,000 of deductions and a $3,000,000 exemption has a $1,500,000 taxable estate. At 20%, estimated tax is $300,000 and after-tax value is $4,200,000.

Tips for better results

  • Confirm the valuation date and asset values.
  • Use only legally supportable deductions.
  • Enter rules for the correct year and jurisdiction.
  • Test both current-law and sunset scenarios.
  • Review liquidity separately from total net worth.

Frequently asked questions

Does this use the current federal estate tax exemption?

No. Enter the exemption that applies to the jurisdiction and planning year you are analyzing.

Are debts deductible from an estate?

This model subtracts entered debts and costs, but legal deductibility depends on applicable law.

Does the result include state estate or inheritance tax?

Only if the rate and exemption you enter are intended to represent that tax; inheritance taxes may require beneficiary-specific analysis.

Can estate tax exceed the net estate?

No. This simplified model caps estimated tax at the net estate.

Is the after-tax value the amount each heir receives?

No. It is the aggregate estimate before beneficiary allocations and any beneficiary-level tax.
