Employee Stock Purchase Break-Even Age Calculator

Estimate the age when repeated annual ESPP contributions could reach a target cumulative after-tax profit. Each annual purchase uses the entered discount, then grows to the end of the horizon under a constant return assumption. The calculator searches whole years up to your chosen maximum.

Formula

Lot value at horizon = contribution ÷ (1 − discount) × (1 + growth)ʰᵒˡᵈⁱⁿᵍ ʸᵉᵃʳˢ
After-tax profit = total gain × (1 − tax rate)

What the result means

The main result is the first modeled whole-year age when cumulative after-tax profit reaches the target.

This simplified model ignores contribution limits, lookback rules, changing prices, dividends, payroll timing, and detailed qualifying-disposition tax rules.

Example calculation

Starting at age 30 with $10,000 annual contributions, a 15% discount, 5% growth, a 25% tax rate on profit, and a $25,000 goal, the tool accumulates yearly lots until the target is reached.

Tips for better results

  • Use the latest plan statement for vested units, strike price, and purchase terms.
  • Keep tax rates separate from employer withholding percentages.
  • Test a lower-price or lower-growth case before relying on a favorable scenario.
  • Account separately for blackout windows, expiration dates, and concentration risk.
  • Confirm final tax treatment before exercising or selling company stock.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Employee Stock Purchase Break-Even Age Calculator include payroll withholding?

No. Use the tax-rate input as a planning assumption; actual withholding and final liability can differ.

Can I enter a negative growth rate?

Yes, where a growth field is provided, but the rate must remain above negative 100 percent.

Are fractional shares included?

The math can use fractional shares. Your employer plan or broker may restrict actual purchases or sales to whole shares.

Does the result account for stock-price volatility?

No. The calculator uses the single price or constant growth assumption you enter and does not simulate volatility.

Should I use this result for a tax filing decision?

No. It is an educational estimate; confirm option, RSU, or ESPP treatment with a qualified tax professional.
