Formula

Adjusted recovered volume = max(collected volume − extraneous liquid, 0). Recovery rate = adjusted recovered volume ÷ released volume × 100. Reusable volume = adjusted recovered volume × reusable share.

What the result means

Adjusted recovery rate compares attributable recovered liquid with the estimated release. Removing rain or flush water avoids crediting the response for liquid that was not part of the leak.

Both released and recovered volumes carry measurement uncertainty. A result above 100% usually signals inconsistent estimates, timing, inventory, or unaccounted added liquid.

Example calculation

From an estimated 5,000-gallon release, 4,300 gallons are collected, including 300 gallons of rain or flush water. Adjusted recovery is 4,000 gallons, or 80%. The unrecovered volume is 1,000 gallons, and an 80% reusable share yields 3,200 reusable gallons.

  • Use tank gauges or totalized flow instead of visual estimates when possible.
  • Deduct rainwater and intentional washdown captured with the leak.
  • Align the release and recovery measurement time windows.

Why subtract rain or flush water from collected volume?

Those additions were not part of the original leak and would otherwise overstate recovery performance.

Can the adjusted recovery rate exceed 100 percent?

It can mathematically, but it usually indicates measurement mismatch or unaccounted added liquid and should be investigated.

How is unrecovered volume estimated?

It is the released volume minus adjusted recovered volume, limited to no less than zero.

What should I enter if no extraneous liquid was collected?
