The tool measures average visible red, green, and blue levels, then applies channel gains intended to bring their averages toward a shared neutral value.
Channel gain = mean(R,G,B) ÷ channel average
Gray-world correction assumes the scene averages toward neutral. Strongly single-colored scenes may need a lower strength.

How does automatic white balance work here?
It uses the gray-world assumption and scales color channels toward a common average.
Why does a sunset look less warm after correction?
The algorithm can interpret intentional warm color as a cast; lower the correction strength for such scenes.
Is this equivalent to RAW white balance?
No. It operates on already rendered RGB pixels and cannot recover the flexibility of camera RAW data.
Does white balance change image brightness?
Channel scaling can alter brightness in some colors, although gains are limited to avoid extreme changes.
Will transparent pixels affect the calculation?
