How to use this office tool

  1. Upload a spreadsheet and select the worksheet to number.
  2. Set the new column heading and starting number, then choose whether blank rows should remain unnumbered.
  3. Process and download a new XLSX workbook with the numbering column inserted first.

What this tool does

This tool prepends a new column and fills sequential integers without replacing the source values.

Start number + row eligibility → sequential first column → XLSX

Existing formulas and rich workbook features may not be fully preserved by browser-based reconstruction.

Supported formats and limits

XLSX and XLS workbooks are read with SheetJS. CSV and TSV are supported where listed. Each input file is limited to 25 MB, previews show at most 20 rows and 12 columns, and advanced Excel objects are not guaranteed to survive export.

Tips for better results

  • Use a header such as Row ID or Sequence that does not duplicate an existing column.
  • Skip blank rows when the sheet contains visual separators.
  • Do not use generated row numbers as permanent database identifiers.

FAQ

Can I start Excel row numbers at a value other than 1?

Yes. Enter any safe integer as the starting value.

Where is the new row-number column inserted?

It is inserted as the first column in the exported worksheet.

Can blank spreadsheet rows remain unnumbered?

Yes. Enable Skip blank rows.

Will existing Excel row numbers be overwritten?

No. The tool adds a new column; it does not alter Excel's worksheet row labels.

Are filtered-out rows treated differently?

The browser reads the worksheet data stored in the file and does not reproduce Excel's live filter view.
