A lot of spreadsheet work is really structural editing: moving columns into a better order, splitting combined values, filling missing cells, extracting parts of a column, deleting unwanted rows, or turning one layout into another. Those jobs are easy to do manually on a small sheet, but they become repetitive and error-prone when a file has hundreds or thousands of records.
Think about the final table shape before making changes. If you are splitting a full-name field, decide where middle names and suffixes should go. If you are combining columns, choose a separator that will not collide with the data. When filling blanks, make sure the value above actually belongs to the following rows. Structural tools save time, but the right rule depends on how the source sheet was originally built.
Practical tips
- Make headers unique before moving or combining columns.
- Use a copy when deleting rows or columns from a file you may need to audit later.
- Check merged cells before performing row-based operations.
- Choose delimiters carefully when splitting addresses, names, or tags.
- After reordering data, verify that related columns still line up record by record.
