How to use this calculator

Formula

Battery energy added = capacity × (target SOC − start SOC)
Effective wall power = min(charger × load factor, vehicle AC limit)
Time = battery energy added ÷ (effective wall power × charging efficiency)

What the result means

Charging time is an idealized average for the selected SOC window. Real power can vary with temperature, battery conditioning, voltage, and vehicle control.

Electrical installation and continuous-load limits must follow the charger instructions and applicable local electrical code.

Example calculation

A 75 kWh battery charging from 20% to 80% needs 45 kWh. With an 11.5 kW charger at 80%, an 11 kW vehicle limit, and 90% efficiency, effective wall power is 9.2 kW and time is about 5.43 hours.

Tips for better results

  • Use the vehicle’s AC limit, not its DC fast-charge peak.
  • Enter usable rather than gross battery capacity when available.
  • Allow extra time in very hot or cold conditions.
  • Have circuit capacity checked by a qualified installer.

Why is home EV charging power lower than the charger rating?

The vehicle AC limit or the entered continuous-load factor can cap effective wall power below the charger nameplate rating.

Does charging slow near 100% on a home AC charger?

It can. Battery management may reduce power near a high state of charge, so actual sessions can take longer than this constant-power estimate.

Does the home EV charging time calculation result include taxes or financing?

No. The estimate excludes vehicle-specific taper and thermal-conditioning behavior. Add taxes, financing costs, incentives, and contract-specific charges separately when they apply.

Can I enter decimal values in this home EV charging time calculation?

What happens if I enter zero?
