Online Course Net Revenue Calculator

Calculate the revenue your online course keeps after refunds, platform charges, payment processing, and other sale-linked costs. Percentage fees are applied to sales after refunds, while fixed processing charges use the transaction count. The result includes a retained margin and net revenue per transaction so you can see whether sales volume is translating into usable revenue.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter gross sales for one reporting period.

  3. Enter platform and payment-processing percentages.
  4. Add transaction count, fixed processing fee, and other linked costs.
  5. Calculate net revenue and retained margin.

Formula

Adjusted sales = Gross sales − Refunds and discounts
Net revenue = Adjusted sales − Platform fees − Processing fees − Other costs

What the result means

Net revenue is the portion of adjusted sales left after the deductions entered here. It is not accounting profit because general overhead, payroll, tax, and unrelated operating expenses may still remain.

Fee bases vary by provider. Check your statements and adjust inputs if a platform charges fees on taxes, shipping, or pre-refund sales.

Example calculation

From $10,000 gross sales, subtract $500 in refunds. On $9,500 adjusted sales, 10% platform fees are $950 and 2.9% processing is $275.50. With 250 fixed fees of $0.30 and $350 other costs, net revenue is $7,849.50, or 82.63% of adjusted sales.

Tips for better results

  • Use settlement reports instead of headline storefront sales.
  • Separate seller-funded discounts from platform-funded promotions.
  • Update transaction count when average order size changes.
  • Include affiliate commissions or delivery costs only once.
  • Compare net margin across products as well as total net revenue.

Frequently asked questions

Does online course net revenue mean profit?

No. Net revenue removes the entered sale-linked deductions, but it does not automatically include payroll, overhead, taxes, or every operating expense.

Are percentage fees calculated before or after refunds?

This calculator applies percentage fees after refunds and discounts. Adjust the inputs if your provider uses a different fee base.

Where do fixed payment processing fees appear?

The calculator multiplies the fixed fee per transaction by the transaction count and includes that amount in total deductions.

Can net revenue be negative?

Yes. Refunds and sale-linked costs can exceed adjusted sales. A negative result means the entered period did not retain revenue before broader overhead.

Should sales tax be included in gross sales?

Use revenue excluding taxes collected on behalf of authorities unless your internal reporting deliberately treats those amounts differently.
