CDN Traffic Utilization Rate Calculator

Measure CDN traffic utilization against contracted or engineered capacity, including remaining headroom, peak-adjusted usage, and the capacity needed at a target utilization.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter observed average traffic for the same period as the capacity allowance.
  2. Enter available or contracted traffic capacity.
  3. Use a measured peak-to-average factor when available.
  4. Choose an internal target and compare current headroom with required capacity.

Formula

Utilization = Average traffic ÷ Capacity × 100
Peak-adjusted utilization = Average traffic × Peak factor ÷ Capacity × 100
Capacity at target = Average traffic ÷ Target utilization

What the result means

Average utilization shows how much of the stated monthly capacity is consumed. Peak-adjusted utilization is a stress indicator based on the entered peak factor, not a measured bandwidth percentile.

Traffic allowance and instantaneous throughput are different constraints. Use consistent capacity units and evaluate bandwidth separately when your CDN contract caps requests per second or throughput.

Example calculation

At 600 TB of average traffic and 1,000 TB of capacity, utilization is 60.00% and headroom is 400 TB. A 1.35× peak factor produces 81.00% peak-adjusted utilization. At a 75% target, required capacity is 800 TB.

Tips for better results

  • Use billing-export data rather than rounded dashboard totals.
  • Keep traffic volume and pricing units aligned before comparing scenarios.
  • Recalculate after a contract, architecture, or retention-policy change.
  • Base the peak factor on a consistent observation window.
  • Investigate both sustained saturation and short-lived event spikes.

Frequently asked questions

What capacity should I enter for CDN utilization?

Enter the usable traffic allowance for the same period and unit as the observed traffic.

Why can peak-adjusted CDN utilization exceed 100%?

The estimated peak demand can exceed stated capacity when average traffic multiplied by the peak factor is larger than capacity.

Is CDN utilization the same as cache hit ratio?

No. Utilization compares traffic with capacity, while cache hit ratio measures requests or bytes served from cache.

How does target utilization affect required capacity?

A lower target requires more capacity for the same average traffic and therefore creates more headroom.

Can I use Gbps instead of TB?

Yes, if both usage and capacity use the same throughput unit and observation basis; the displayed TB labels would then be conceptual only.
