How to use this calculator

  1. Enter observed average demand.
  2. Enter usable capacity after operational constraints.
  3. Set a measured or conservative peak factor.
  4. Choose a target utilization and review capacity headroom.

Formula

Monthly ingest = Daily telemetry × 30 × Overhead multiplier
Utilization = Monthly ingest ÷ Usable capacity × 100
Retained volume = Daily telemetry × Retention days × Overhead multiplier

What the result means

The main result shows average monthly ingest utilization. Secondary values expose peak pressure and remaining capacity.

Retention volume is a storage-planning estimate and is separate from monthly ingest capacity. Calendar months are modeled as 30 days.

Example calculation

At 500 GB/day, a 30-day retention window, 1.2× overhead, 20,000 GB/month capacity, and a 1.3× peak-day factor, monthly ingest is 18,000 GB. Average utilization is 90.00%, peak-adjusted utilization is 117.00%, and retained volume is 18,000 GB.

Tips for better results

  • Use billing-export data rather than rounded dashboard totals.
  • Keep traffic volume and pricing units aligned before comparing scenarios.
  • Recalculate after a contract, architecture, or retention-policy change.
  • Measure indexing and replication overhead from actual platform usage.
  • Plan regional failure and retry amplification as separate peak cases.

Frequently asked questions

How is monthly observability ingest estimated?

Daily raw telemetry is multiplied by 30 days and the indexing or replica overhead multiplier.

Is retained telemetry the same as ingest capacity?

No. Retained volume estimates stored data across the retention window; ingest capacity limits new data processed in a month.

Why can peak-adjusted utilization exceed 100%?

Peak-day demand after overhead can be larger than the usable monthly capacity entered.

What should the overhead multiplier include?

Include measured expansion from indexing, parsing, replicas, or other platform transformations.

Does the calculation include tiered storage capacity?

No. Model each storage tier separately if its usable capacity or retention rules differ.
