Formula

Weight utilization = Used weight ÷ Available weight × 100

Volume utilization = Used volume ÷ Usable volume × 100

What the result means

The main result is the higher of weight and volume utilization because that dimension becomes the first practical capacity constraint.

Capacity percentages do not confirm safe loading. Follow carrier, equipment, balance, dangerous-goods, and cargo-securing requirements.

Example calculation

For 7,200 kg in a 10,000 kg allocation and 42 m³ in 60 m³:

Weight = 72.00%; Volume = 70.00%; limiting utilization = 72.00%

  • Measure usable volume rather than external equipment dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this air freight utilization calculator show a limiting dimension?

A shipment can reach its weight limit before its volume limit, or vice versa. The higher percentage is the binding utilization.

Can weight utilization exceed 100 percent?

Yes. A result above 100% signals that the entered used weight exceeds the stated available weight and the plan is overloaded.

Should available capacity be gross or payload capacity?

Use cargo capacity available to this shipment after tare, operational restrictions, and reserved space, not gross equipment capacity.

How is remaining capacity calculated?

Remaining weight and volume equal available capacity minus used capacity. Negative values indicate the amount over capacity.

Does high volume utilization mean the load is efficiently packed?

Not necessarily. The percentage measures occupied volume, but it does not evaluate stability, compatibility, shape, or load-securing quality.
