Formula

Usable capacity = Cars × Payload per car × Capacity factor

Utilization = Planned cargo ÷ Usable capacity × 100

What the result means

The main result is planned cargo as a percentage of usable capacity after the operational factor is applied.

Confirm route and equipment constraints before operating a train. Nominal payload alone does not establish a safe or permitted consist.

Example calculation

Forty cars at 70 t each provide 2,800 t nominal capacity. At a 90% factor, usable capacity is 2,520 t.

2,400 ÷ 2,520 × 100 = 95.24%

  • Apply a factor supported by the actual route and operating plan.
  • Check whether all cars share the same payload rating.
  • Recalculate when the consist or route changes.
