Estimate end-to-end rail transit time by combining line-haul movement with terminal, transfer, inspection, and contingency time. The result separates moving time from operational dwell so planners can identify which part of the journey is driving the promised delivery window.
Moving time = distance ÷ average moving speed. Base time = moving time + terminal dwell + (stops × hours per stop). Total time = base time × (1 + buffer ÷ 100).
The total is a planning duration, not a guaranteed arrival time. Compare the moving-time and dwell-time components before adding more buffer; reducing dwell can be more effective than assuming a faster route.
Use consistent route miles and operating hours. Weather, border clearance, equipment availability, excursions, and carrier schedules can still change the actual trip.
For 1,800 miles at 32 mph, moving time is 56.25 hours. Adding 28 terminal hours and four 5-hour stops gives 104.25 hours. A 10% buffer produces 114.68 hours, or 4.78 days.
Use one consistent operating or accounting period for every input. Mixing daily volume with monthly capacity or cost will distort the result.
