Container Loading Capacity Calculator

Estimate how many identical cartons can fit in a container using internal dimensions, carton dimensions, payload limits, and a practical packing-efficiency allowance. The calculator checks both usable volume and weight, then uses the tighter limit as capacity. It is best for early load planning when a full 3D packing simulation is not available and mixed-SKU placement is outside scope.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the usable internal container dimensions.
  2. Add maximum payload and gross carton weight.
  3. Enter outside carton dimensions and a realistic packing-efficiency allowance.
  4. Calculate and identify whether volume or weight is binding.

Formula

Volume limit = floor(container volume × efficiency ÷ carton volume)
Weight limit = floor(maximum payload ÷ carton weight)
Capacity = smaller of the two limits

What the result means

The smaller limit controls the estimated carton count. A weight-bound load reaches payload first; a volume-bound load runs out of practical space first.

This screening model does not prove that cartons tessellate in the stated dimensions. Confirm the final loading pattern and legal weight distribution.

Example calculation

The default container has 67.55 m³ of internal volume. At 85% efficiency, 0.084 m³ cartons give a volume limit of 683. Payload allows 1,472 cartons, so estimated capacity is 683 cartons.

Tips for better results

  • Use internal dimensions, not nominal exterior dimensions.
  • Include carton packaging in both dimensions and gross weight.
  • Lower efficiency for mixed loads, dunnage, or awkward shapes.
  • Check axle, floor-load, center-of-gravity, and securing requirements separately.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the container capacity use packing efficiency?

A simple volume ratio assumes perfect use of every void; efficiency provides an explicit allowance for layout loss and unusable space.

Does this calculator test every carton orientation?

No. It is a volume-and-weight screening model, so a detailed 3D loading plan may produce a different count.

Should carton weight include packaging?

Yes. Use gross loaded-carton weight so the payload check includes the packaging.

What happens when payload is the limiting factor?

Capacity is capped at the whole-carton count that does not exceed the entered maximum payload.

Can I use this for mixed carton sizes?

Not directly. Calculate homogeneous groups separately or use a mixed-load optimization tool for the final plan.
