Formula

Usable window = published window − unavailable time. Utilization (%) = scheduled delivery time ÷ usable window × 100. Additional stops = floor(remaining time ÷ average added-stop time).

What the result means

Utilization shows the share of genuinely usable time already committed. A value above 100% indicates that the schedule does not fit the window under the entered assumptions.

A lower percentage is not automatically wasteful: dispatchers often preserve time for traffic variability, failed delivery attempts, or priority orders.

Example calculation

A 480-minute window with 60 blocked minutes leaves 420 usable minutes. Scheduling 330 minutes uses 78.57%, leaves 90 minutes, and can fit 3 more 30-minute stops.

Tips for better results

  • Use data from a consistent route, SKU group, supplier, and reporting period.
  • Replace optimistic averages with a realistic operating estimate.
  • Test a constrained or delayed case as well as the normal case.
  • Keep excluded costs or operating limits documented beside your scenario.
  • Recalculate when demand, lead time, route design, or shipment volume changes.

Frequently asked questions

Why subtract loading and breaks from a delivery window?

Those minutes cannot be assigned to delivery work, so subtracting them gives the capacity that dispatch can actually schedule.

What does delivery window utilization above 100 percent mean?

The scheduled work exceeds usable time. Reduce route work, remove blocked time, or widen the window.

Can unused delivery time be converted into extra stops?

Yes. The calculator divides remaining usable minutes by the average incremental time per stop and rounds down.

Should traffic contingency be entered as unavailable time?

You can reserve it as unavailable time if it is a fixed allowance; otherwise include it in scheduled route time.

Why might an operation intentionally leave delivery window capacity unused?

Spare time can absorb traffic, access delays, urgent orders, and variation between stops.
