Formula

Available seconds = scheduled hours × 3,600 − (breaks + changeover) × 60
Takt time = available seconds ÷ required good units
Cycle-to-takt gap = actual cycle − takt time

What the result means

Takt time is the maximum average time allowed per required good unit within the selected demand period. A measured cycle above takt indicates a shortfall under the entered assumptions.

Takt does not include an automatic allowance for defects or unplanned downtime. If demand is stated as good units, plan those losses separately or adjust capacity assumptions.

Example calculation

For an 8-hour shift with 30 minutes of breaks, 30 minutes of changeover, and demand for 420 good units, available time is 420 minutes and takt is 60 seconds per unit. An actual 55-second cycle is 5 seconds faster than takt.
