Formula

Net crop demand = trees × gallons per tree per day × days × (1 − rainfall offset). Gross delivery = net demand ÷ irrigation efficiency.

What the result means

The main result is the water volume that must leave the irrigation system, not merely the amount plants are expected to use.

Soil water storage, crop stage, canopy size, evapotranspiration, salinity leaching, and legal water restrictions may require a more detailed irrigation schedule.

Example calculation

For 500 trees needing 15 gal/day over 30 days, with rainfall meeting 20% of demand and 85% efficiency, net crop demand is 180,000 gal and gross delivery is about 211,765 gal.

  • Base daily demand on current crop stage and local evapotranspiration data.
  • Use effective rainfall, not total rainfall.

Why is gross irrigation greater than net orchard demand?

Gross irrigation includes water that does not reach or remain in the active root zone.

Should young and mature trees be calculated together?

Only if their water demand is similar; otherwise calculate separate irrigation blocks.
