How to use this calculator
- Enter the number of complete doses in the package.
- Enter the alternative’s all-in cost per dose.
- Add unavoidable fees charged per package.
- Compare an actual medication price with the break-even amount.
Compare a medication package with an alternative on a per-dose basis and find the package price at which both choices cost the same. Enter usable doses per package, the alternative cost per dose, package-level fees, and an actual candidate price. The tool reports the break-even package price, effective candidate cost per dose, and projected difference.
Alternative total = usable doses × alternative cost per dose. Break-even medication price = max(0, alternative total − package-level fees).
At the break-even medication price, the candidate’s price plus its package fees equals the alternative cost for the same usable dose count.
Compare only options a veterinarian has approved as clinically appropriate. Products with different strengths, formulations, or dosing instructions may not be interchangeable.
For 30 doses and a $2.25 alternative dose cost, the comparable alternative totals $67.50. With $8 package fees, the break-even medication price is $59.50. A $50 candidate totals $58 with fees, $9.50 less than the alternative.
It is the medication-only package price that, after adding package fees, matches the alternative cost for the same dose count.
If package fees already equal or exceed the alternative total, no positive medication price can make the package cheaper.
Only if a veterinarian confirms the options are appropriate and you convert both to the same number of prescribed administrations.
Use your expected out-of-pocket costs consistently for both choices if reimbursement is reliable and applicable.
No. Medication choice, strength, formulation, and substitutions must be confirmed by the prescribing veterinarian.
