Formula

Session load = total pitches × (effort ÷ 100)² + high-intent pitches × 0.5. Seven-day load adds the prior six-day load.

What the result means

Effort is squared so higher-intensity work contributes disproportionately. The high-intent term distinguishes sessions with many near-maximal pitches from easier command work.

This index is not an injury predictor and does not replace age-specific rules, organizational policies, or medical guidance.

Example calculation

Seventy-five pitches at 85% average effort with 20 high-intent pitches produce 64.2 session load units. With 180 prior units, the seven-day total is 244.2.

  • Count high-intent pitches as a subset of total pitches.
  • Include warm-up pitches only if you always track them.
  • Review workload with recovery, pain, velocity, and command.
