Freight Carbon Emission Footprint Calculator

Estimate shipment emissions from freight mass, distance, and a mode-specific emission factor. The result includes total CO₂e, freight activity in tonne-kilometers, and emissions intensity per kilogram shipped.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the shipment mass and transport distance.
  2. Select or enter an emission factor that matches the freight mode and units.
  3. Confirm that mass, distance, and factor cover the same shipment boundary.
  4. Select Calculate to review freight activity and total CO₂e.

Formula

Emissions (kg CO₂e) = mass (t) × distance (km) × factor (kg CO₂e/t-km) × shipments

What the result means

The main result estimates total freight emissions for the entered activity. The calculation is factor-based and does not separately model empty returns, refrigeration, handling, or warehousing.

Emission factors vary by vehicle, fuel, load factor, geography, and methodology. Supply a factor consistent with your reporting boundary.

Example calculation

Moving 18 tonnes over 850 km with a 0.062 kg CO₂e/t-km factor for 12 shipments equals 183,600 t-km and 11.38 t CO₂e.

Tips for better results

  • Use actual shipment weights and routed distances when available.
  • Choose an emission factor for the correct mode, vehicle class, and region.
  • Include empty running or return legs when they belong to the boundary.
  • Keep factor units aligned with the tonne-kilometer calculation.
  • Record the factor source and reporting year for repeatable estimates.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tonne-kilometer in freight emissions?

One tonne-kilometer represents one metric tonne of freight moved one kilometer.

Where should I get a freight emission factor?

Use a factor from the carrier, a recognized inventory program, or an official dataset that matches the mode and boundary.

Does the calculator include empty return trips?

Only if the emission factor already includes them or you adjust the activity or factor to represent empty running.

Can I calculate emissions for several identical shipments?

Yes. Enter the number of shipments and the tool multiplies the mass-distance activity accordingly.

Why is freight mass entered in metric tonnes?

The factor is expressed per tonne-kilometer, so mass must be in metric tonnes for the units to match.
