Formula

Target emissions = Baseline × (1 − Target %)
Equal annual reduction = (Baseline − Target emissions) ÷ Years
Target intensity improvement = 1 − (Target emissions ÷ Baseline) ÷ Activity growth factor

What the result means

The main result is the absolute annual emissions level at the end of the target period. The straight-line annual value is a simple progress reference; real project delivery can be uneven.

This tool does not determine whether a target aligns with a specific standard, sector pathway, climate scenario, or reporting framework.

Example calculation

A 1,200.00 tCO2e baseline with a 40% target gives end emissions of 720.00 tCO2e and a total reduction of 480.00 tCO2e. Over 5 years, the equal annual reduction is 96.00 tCO2e. With 3% annual activity change, the implied intensity improvement is 48.24%.

  • Use a baseline with complete, representative activity data.
  • Keep scopes, supplier coverage, venues, and consolidation rules consistent.
  • Separate absolute emissions progress from emissions-intensity progress.
  • Assign reductions to named projects, owners, budgets, and delivery dates.
  • Recalculate the baseline transparently after material structural or methodological changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the annual reduction pathway linear or compounded?

The calculator uses an equal absolute reduction each year. It is a planning pathway, not a forecast of how projects will actually deliver reductions.

How should I choose the event baseline year?

Choose a representative year with reliable data, document the organizational and operational boundary, and keep that boundary consistent or explain recalculations.

What does the activity-growth input change?

It does not change the absolute emissions target. It estimates the improvement in emissions intensity needed if activity grows over the target period.

Can the target percentage be 100%?

Yes mathematically, but a zero-emissions target may require technologies, procurement, or boundary assumptions that should be evaluated separately.

Does purchasing offsets count toward the reduction target?

This calculator treats the target as a reduction in the emissions inventory. Offset claims should be tracked separately unless the applicable framework explicitly says otherwise.
