Interior Painting Project Budget Calculator

Build an interior painting budget from measured wall area, coat count, whole-gallon paint purchases, local labor pricing, and a project-specific prep allowance. The result separates paint, labor, and fixed prep or supply costs, making contractor estimates easier to compare on a consistent scope.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the wall perimeter, height, and excluded openings.
  2. Enter coat count and the selected paint’s coverage and price.
  3. Use a local labor quote expressed per square foot per coat.
  4. Add prep, equipment, and consumable costs as one allowance.

Formula

Paint cost = round up(area × coats ÷ coverage) × gallon price
Labor = area × coats × labor price
Total = paint + labor + prep/supplies

What the result means

The total is a scope-based planning budget. Separating paint, coat-based labor, and prep makes quote comparisons easier.

This estimate excludes taxes, permits, lead or hazardous-material work, repairs, travel, and contingency unless you include them in prep and supplies.

Example calculation

For 400 sq ft, two coats, 350 sq ft per gallon, $48 paint, $1.25 labor per sq ft per coat, and $250 prep, the estimate is $1,394: $144 paint, $1,000 labor, and $250 prep.

Tips for better results

  • Use contractor quotes for local labor rather than a national average.
  • Confirm whether labor pricing already includes masking and cleanup.
  • Use whole-gallon purchasing quantities.
  • Add repair, access equipment, and premium primer to prep.
  • Compare bids using the same measured area and coat count.

Frequently asked questions

Does this interior painting budget include primer?

Not automatically. Add primer and its application cost to the prep and supplies allowance if the project requires it.

Why is labor multiplied by the number of coats?

The entered labor rate is defined per square foot per coat, so each additional coat repeats application work.

Are paint gallons rounded before calculating cost?

Yes. The calculator rounds finish paint up to whole gallons before multiplying by the entered gallon price.

Where should I include scaffolding or furniture protection?

Include access equipment, masking, protection, and similar fixed costs in the prep and supplies field.

Does the total include sales tax or contingency?

No. Add those amounts to prep and supplies or apply them separately after reviewing local requirements.
