Formula

Boards = ceil(deck width ÷ installed board coverage × (1 + waste %)); framing counts use ceiling intervals plus an end member.

What the result means

The board count assumes each board runs the full deck length. Framing counts are layout estimates, not structural sizing.

Do not build from this takeoff alone. A qualified design must specify species, grade, spans, fasteners, ledger details, frost depth, and lateral connections.

Example calculation

A 20 ft by 12 ft deck using 5.5 in coverage, 16 in joist spacing, 6 ft beam and post spacing, three bags per post, and 10% decking waste needs about 29 full-length boards, 16 joists, 3 beam rows, 15 posts, and 45 concrete bags.

Does the deck board count include board gaps?

Use an installed coverage value that reflects the actual board face and your planned gap so the count matches the layout.

Why does the joist count add one?

Spacing creates intervals; an additional member is needed at the far edge of a simple rectangular layout.

Are rim joists included?

The transverse joist count includes edge positions, but it does not provide a separate linear-foot takeoff for all rim and blocking material.

Can I use these beam and post counts for permitting?

No. They are preliminary quantities based on user-entered spacing and do not establish structural compliance.

How should I handle stairs or an angled deck?

Calculate the main rectangle here, then prepare a separate takeoff for stairs, angles, landings, and special framing.
