Labor-hours = area × area labor rate + railing × railing rate + stairs × hours per stair + setup

What the result means

Total labor-hours add every worker's effort. Dividing by crew size and daily hours estimates uninterrupted workdays but does not include inspections, curing, or weather delays.

Productivity rates are project assumptions. Height, demolition, access, fastening system, and finish details can materially change labor.

Example calculation

A 240 sq ft deck at 0.35 hr/sq ft, 36 ft of railing at 0.3 hr/ft, one 16-hour stair run, and 12 setup hours totals 122.8 labor-hours. A three-person crew needs about 5.1 eight-hour days.

  • Separate demolition rather than hiding it in new-build productivity.

Does the area labor rate include footings?

Only if your chosen rate is based on projects where footing labor was included; otherwise add footing effort to setup or adjust the rate.

Why are railing and stairs calculated separately?

They are detail-intensive and do not scale reliably with deck area.

Can three workers always finish in one-third the time?

No. The crew-day result assumes work can be divided efficiently; congestion and task dependencies can reduce that benefit.

Should demolition hours be included?

Add them explicitly to setup or use a higher calibrated rate; new-build rates alone may understate removal work.

Are permit delays included in workdays?

No. The result estimates productive crew days, not total calendar duration.
