How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the circuit's measured or contracted downstream capacity.
  2. Set a reserve for bursts, growth, and non-user traffic.
  3. Enter average throughput per concurrently active user.
  4. Add expected protocol and retransmission overhead, then calculate.

Formula

Usable bandwidth = line bandwidth × (1 − reserve). Provisioned demand per user = user demand ÷ (1 − overhead). Capacity = floor(usable bandwidth ÷ provisioned demand).

What the result means

The whole-number result is a planning capacity, not a login limit. It assumes active users have roughly similar average demand and that the entered bandwidth is the bottleneck.

Measure peak-hour traffic when possible. Wi-Fi airtime, upstream limits, application bursts, and ISP congestion can reduce real capacity.

Example calculation

With 500 Mbps, a 20% reserve, 2.5 Mbps per active user, and 12% overhead, usable bandwidth is 400 Mbps and provisioned demand is 2.84 Mbps per user. The planning capacity is 140 concurrent users.

  • Use measured throughput rather than a best-case link speed.
  • Model video meetings separately from light web users.
  • Keep reserve for backups, updates, and traffic spikes.
  • Repeat the estimate for upstream capacity if uploads matter.
  • Compare the estimate with peak concurrent device counts.

Should I use download or upload bandwidth?

Use the direction that becomes constrained first. For video calls and cloud backups, run the calculation separately for upload and download.

What counts as a concurrent user?

A concurrent user is actively consuming bandwidth during the same planning interval, not merely connected or authenticated.

Why is protocol overhead entered separately?

Headers, encryption, retransmissions, and tunneling consume capacity that is not reflected in application payload demand.

Can this estimate Wi-Fi client capacity?

It estimates throughput capacity only. Radio airtime, channel width, interference, and access-point client limits also matter.

Why does the calculator round down?

A fraction of a user cannot be fully supported at the entered demand, so planning capacity uses the next lower whole number.
