Formula

Monthly GB = Mbps × utilization × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 × active hours × days × direction multiplier.

What the result means

The result is decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB). It estimates transferred data, not storage footprint after compression, deduplication, or caching.

Provider billing units vary. Some services use binary GiB or count only outbound traffic, so compare the result with the plan's own definition.

Example calculation

At 100 Mbps, 35% utilization, 10 hours per day, 22 days, and a 2× traffic multiplier, usage is 6,930 GB per month, or 315 GB per active day.

Frequently asked questions

Does 100 Mbps mean 100 megabytes per second?

No. Mbps is megabits per second; divide by eight to convert bits to bytes before converting to GB.

Why is utilization needed?

A link rarely transfers at its full line rate during every active second. Utilization converts capacity into average throughput.

Should inbound and outbound traffic both be counted?

Count both only when your allowance or cost applies to both directions. Many cloud services charge mainly for outbound transfer.

Does the result include protocol overhead?

It includes whatever is present in the bandwidth rate you enter. An application-payload rate may need a separate overhead adjustment.

Why might my provider report a different total?

Sampling intervals, decimal versus binary units, billing direction, compression, and provider-side measurement points can differ.
