How to use this calculator

  1. Set the maximum acceptable round-trip time.
  2. Enter one-way route distance and a route inflation factor.
  3. Add hop count, per-hop delay, processing, and serialization allowances.
  4. Check whether the remaining budget is positive before adding contingency.

Formula

Propagation RTT ≈ 2 × distance × route factor ÷ 200 km/ms
Total RTT = propagation RTT + hops × per-hop delay + processing + serialization
Margin = target − total RTT

What the result means

A positive margin means the entered components fit inside the target. A negative margin shows how much delay must be removed or how far the target must be relaxed.

The propagation estimate assumes approximately 200,000 km/s in fiber. Wireless, copper, satellite, queues, retransmissions, and indirect routing may require different allowances.

Example calculation

With a 100 ms target, a 1,000 km one-way route, 1.2× route factor, eight 0.5 ms hops, 10 ms processing, and 2 ms serialization, estimated RTT is 28 ms. The remaining budget is 72 ms.

Tips for better results

  • Use cable-route distance rather than map distance.
  • Separate fixed processing from variable queue delay.
  • Measure p50 and p95 latency, not only the average.
  • Reserve margin for congestion and route changes.
  • Test from the user region that matters most.

The target is round-trip latency, so the signal travels the one-way route in both directions.

What route inflation factor should I use?

Use a factor derived from known fiber or network routes. If routes are uncertain, compare several scenarios rather than treating one factor as exact.

Should per-hop delay include application processing?

No. Use per-hop delay for network devices and enter application, server, and queue time in the processing field.

Can this estimate model satellite latency?

Not accurately with the fiber speed assumption. Enter a measured propagation allowance as processing or use a satellite-specific path model.

What does a negative latency margin mean?

The assigned path components exceed the target by the absolute value of the displayed margin.
