Measure the observed share of records that fail a defined data quality check and translate it into errors per thousand, clean-rate percentage, and estimated correction cost. Use one mutually exclusive error rule for the numerator and the same inspected population for the denominator. This calculator reports the measured sample rate; it does not claim that every uninspected record has the same rate.
Error rate = errors ÷ reviewed items × 100%
Errors per 1,000 = error rate × 1,000. Estimated rework = errors × cost per error.
The main result is the observed item-level error rate. The supporting results restate that rate and estimate direct correction cost using your own assumption.
Define an error consistently. This descriptive rate does not include a confidence interval or adjust for nonrepresentative sampling.
For 35 errors among 5,000 records, the observed error rate is 0.70%, the clean rate is 99.30%, and the rate is 7.00 errors per 1,000 records. At $12 per error, observed rework is $420.
Not with this item-level rate. Count the item once, or switch to a defect-opportunity metric and clearly redefine the denominator.
Yes, when no sampled items fail. A zero observed rate does not prove the population error rate is exactly zero.

It expresses the same rate on a convenient scale: error count divided by total items, multiplied by 1,000.
It is a simple estimate based on the entered cost per observed error. It excludes fixed costs, downstream effects, and variation between errors.
